Letterman Club Hazing

Does anyone remember the days when the Letterman club would haze new members and form a belt line down the practice field for the neophytes?

I remember being 'inducted' and running the gauntlet, and having to eat a vaseline and tabasco sandwich on the front steps of the school. I think nowadays that would be unusual...due to the political correctness of the era. But I can remember it as a rite of passage and was proud to be a member.

Jr/Sr Prom

I think I remember that when we were Jrs, the Jr/Sr prom was so rowdy, that ours was cancelled when we were Srs.

My wife, Norma (Thomason - class of '51) says no, it was OUR (class of '50) Jr/Sr prom that was wild, and her's(class of '51) was cancelled.

They say the memory is the first thing to go, and maybe I don't remember it like that...does anyone know? (If she's right don't tell her)

Dick

Dick, I remember it more like you did. I know when I was a Jr. I was going steady with Doug McBride. We went to a Jr/Sr dance with a western theme. Boys all in boots and Jeans. I went as a can-can girl. Wasn't aware during the dance, but afterwards learned that boys had been slipping out to the parking lot to drink hard liquer. The next day there was a big ruckus at the school and it was decided no more Jr/Sr dances. For our Senior year I remember we went for a Senior only swimming party at Sheep Creek. No dance, but we may have had more parties than that outing. So, I think it was the Seniors of '49 that shut down the Jr/Sr dance and not us. Wonder how long that lasted? Anyone know? Since we started the annual again that year, surely we would have said something about a prom if we had had one.

Dear Bill,

Somewhere in my "stuff" is a newspaper article that explains what happened to the number count. What I remember is that we always had 140 members (70 girls and 70 boys). Trice Broadrick was our speaker at the first reunion (1956 I think) He was the one to get the count wrong in his speech and it got repeated in the newspaper.

Bill - I don't have either an original list, or the updated increased list to compare. When I tried to 'print' the roster, since it is white type , it didn't print on my printer. I'll try something else later.

There has been a problem with this page since last October. When you click on a message, there is another before it. Your reply goes to the first message. It looks like that problem has gone away on the Guest Book, and maybe this is the first correct one on Memories page.

The Classmates page was taken from the 1995 directory. We added James Wood to make it agree with the 1990 directory. I have no idea about the source of either.

Bill and Dick,

My explanation of the number in our class got under a September message. Did you read it? Again, we had 140 in our class (70 boys and 70 girls) and Trice Broadrick made the count error in his speech at our first reunion in 1956. Bill, I sent you my theory of the mixup to your e-mail. Did you get it? Anyhow I feel sure we have the correct number now and the 134 count was in error.

Somewhere I think I have a coy of the commencement flyer that lists the grads on the back - but I am not sure if I have it or where it is. I will do a search and if I come up with it will post. Nancy sounds right, but what do I know at this point? I do have a yearbook and could try counting the pix.

School Starting - After Labor Day

Anyone remember how nice it was when we started the school year the Tuesday after Labor day?

Nowadays, most schools around here start the 2nd Week in AUGUST! And still get out the last week of May.

Of course, our football team had to show up the middle of August (In our good old days) and check out the uniforms and equipment, and get out in the hot Oklahoma August sun for two-a-day practices. Great times at AHS!

First Football Game - Class of '50 - AHS vs Hugo

Here's a picture of the Football Program for the first football game of our Senior Year: this was the first time AHS had played Hugo, and we didn't know what to expect.

Hugo was reported to be tough, mountain-men types, and we were worried. However, we DID win that one.

Class of '50 - Reunion in 1956 Program

Here's a copy of the first 'organized' reunion (did we have some un-organized ones?) in 1956.

You can tell fancy word processors hadn't been invented yet, just barely typewriters with ink ribbons. Luckily, I took typing in AHS and it has been the most valuable class I think I had - keyboarding is a must with computers, now.

I thought it would be a snap class, since "Hook" Eales was teaching it. He was the football line coach and I was one of the tackles. But it wasn't easy even so. But - I did have Norma Thomason next to me in class. Turned out I've had her next to me for 50 years, too. What you learn in high school sticks with you, huh?

I'm trying to locate Mr. Lofton for my father, Elvin McAlister. Tom taught at Will Rodgers Elementary School in Hobbs, N.M., where my dad was principal, before returning to Oklahoma to be a principal. Dad thought that he might have been in your class or slightly later. I would appreciate any information to help him find this old friend of his. Please contact by e-mail at boblind@home.com or by phone at (972) 530-7724. Thank you, Bob McAlister

Most useful class?

What do you consider your most useful class in AHS? Without a doubt, I feel the typing class I had in Warner 'Hook' Eales class has been the best thing that happened to me.

I originally signed up for the class because I was a lineman in football, and Hook was the line coach. I figured it might make some brownie points, perhaps. But the skills in keyboarding have proved to be immeasurable, not just in typing later on, but now in computing.

As a side note, I was in McAlester on biz last week, and on a light post downtown, there was a direction sign pointing to "Hook Eales Stadium" - he moved (back) to McAlester to be head coach, and they named their stadium for him, like the one we used at Norris - which they named for our coach, Elvan George.

What was your most useful class?

I notice that maybe 50,000 reservists are authorized for call up. Anyone remember the two National Guard units from Ada, (HHB, 171 Field Artillery, and Co C, 180th Inf) with several of our classmates, who were called up in the 45th for Korea in Sept '50, just after we graduated?

If it were needed now, I bet the same response would be given - no holding back - just go!

Thank you Dick, for all the memories you are posting. I forget to read the website and when I come back to catch up, it warms my heart to think of all of the dear friends from Ada High class of 50. This last weeks happening has made everyone realize how important family and friends are. I always enjoy talking with and about my Ada High friends. Thanks Melcena

I'm not a cat, but have been a Cougar, so maybe that's why I was curious about the count. I re-read the messages, and the info from Nancy re: the newspaper article. Then I went back and counted the names on the roster -

There are 140 names for our class, so guess that's it. Nice to have a manageable number so we could kinda know quite a few of out class. Nowadays here it's normal to have a class of about 800+, so they miss out on that enjoyment. 50 years from now, they will wonder who all those people are at their reunion! (grin)

Contnahomas?

Just wondering...what does/did Contnahoma mean? (Bet Nancy can answer, she was Pres of them in '50).

No more - now they have the Couganns. Not too sure why, or what that means either.

And the band had decent uniforms, not like some wild ones I see now. I don't know what the current AHS uniforms look like. Hope they are conventional. Maybe I'm just getting old.

Christmas 1949

Do you remember the last Christmas we had before graduation in '50? The Christmas vacation had just begun, (1949) and the snow was falling.

It fell for several days, leaving about 2' of snow everywhere, with drifts higher in some places. All the cars were avoiding the hills, which attracted sleds like iron to a magnet.

I remember going from the top of Kings Road where Pat Delany's house was, East to the bottom of the hill on a cafeteria tray. Don't know where the tray came from. Then going to the hill at the south end of East Central, going south to the Stadium.

It was longer, and unlike Kings Road which went straight and up to coast to a stop, this one had a dead end at the bottom. With the speed gained from the long hill, it was 'death-defying' to try to go as far as possible and not pile up against the stone wall at the bottom around the stadium.

The snow was on the ground until quite a while after school started, and we had several snowball fights with the 'kids' in Jr. High next door during lunch. And I suspect several got snow put down their shirts and faces rubbed with it. Lotsa fun.

Seems like it doesn't snow like that any more. Just in my memories.
