Two weeks to Valentines! Where did the month of January go? Those of you in Oklahoma know all about our ice storm, so I must add that I hope no one experienced the devestation that some areas had. We in Stillwater came through with no problems, which makes me feel almost guilty.

I should be writing something profound as it appears I am the first to use our nice blank slate. Let's see---Well---Ummm---Deary me, guess I will leave the profound statement to Dick.

You expect me to make a profound statement? OK.

"..to the intelligence quotient (IQ) as mild (IQ 50-70), moderate to severe (IQ 20-50), and profound (IQ less than 20). Mildly handicapped people often make a good adjustment to life." Concise Medical Dictionary: Oxford University Press

With my IQ, guess I qualify as profound. Anyway, speaking of Valentine's Day - remember the little sugar hearts with comments on them? They were pretty profound. When found.

Bill, thanks for the [frustrating] work on the web site.

Hello friends -- today I substitute 'teachered' at Stillwater Middle School. I noticed a familiar name on the roll -- Trahern! I asked Jamie Trahern if his grandpa was Jimmie Trahern -- he said "James Trahern?" -- well, I know him as Jimmie! He was a delightful boy, taller than Jimmie was, but he has Jimmie's eyes. I don't have Jim's email address, but will someone please forward this to him? Love to all, Mary Bryant Park.

Reading Mary's comments about substitute teaching hit a familar chord: I also sub at a local highschool. For those of you not up on the latest requirements, here's some info we could have used back in AHS fifty-two years ago:

Now, if a student is considered 'disadvantaged', the teacher must 'modify' the test by:

1) allowing the student to have copy of notes while testing; 2) make that student's test have fewer multiple choice choices; 3) don't make them use scantron (the fill-in-the-bubble machine graded answer sheets) 4) Give them test study guides; 5) Reduce the length of their test; 6) Require short answers, not essay; 7) do not penalize for spelling; 8) Allow extra time; 9) Allow extra spacing for work; 10) Allow work book 11) Allow student to take quiz to CMC (Content Mastery Class) where another full time teacher helps students with work.

That's the law, now! Remember what it used to be? Mrs. Britt and Richmond would have a fit...

I received a letter from Kyle Perrin, (I think all classmates did) which indicated the scholarship fund (see http://www.adahighclassof50.com/scholarship.htm) balance stands at $12,050.

Other classes also have scholoarship funds: '48: $12,100 and '51: $12,125.

Only the interest on the funds is used, so you can see with Tuition costs per semester $1,000+, and interest rates down, the income is rather low.

Kyle suggests we put in $50 a year for 3 years to bump up the balance - you can send it to him or Henry Katz. I won't put their personal info here for privacy reasons, but if you need addresses or phone nrs. let me know.

Thanks Dick for putting something on the web about the need to increase the fund amount. I have mailed my check to Henry (felt more secure sending it to him than straight to the EC Fdn)& do hope others will also. Send what you can, although $50 or $100 would be great. We can do it I know!

I was just wondering who hasn't been located from our class? I expect sometime we will have another reunion, but until then, maybe we could have an update and try to locate those that have 'dropped out of sight' or haven't been located.

Probably there are some email addresses lacking, but even if they don't use it, there is still the U. S. Mail and Phone Numbers. Since we all like privacy, maybe some classmate (Bill McKeel or Bob Stroud?) could be the keeper of the list and we could contact them if we wanted to find out how to get in touch. I know anything put on the Internet is fair game to 'spiders' who patrol looking for spamming prospects.

If you know of someone who is missing, why not put their name here, and probably someone will know, or we can start looking.

"Decoration" Day

This month we will observe "Memorial Day". When we were in AHS it was observed as "Decoration Day", May 30. This was established as a time to:

" Let us, then, at the time appointed gather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with the choicest flowers of spring-time; let us raise above them the dear old flag they saved from hishonor; let us in this solemn presence renew our pledges to aid and assist those whom they have left among us a sacred charge upon a nation's gratitude, the soldier's and sailor's widow and orphan."

from the original proclamation in 1869 establishing it on May 30th. In the '60s, congress moved it to the Monday of the last weekend in May, to give federal workers a 3 day holiday.

Do you remember the little paper Poppies sold by VFW and others? Did you know that Moina Michael started that, and had a poem -

"We cherish too, the Poppy red That grows on fields where valor led, It seems to signal to the skies That blood of heroes never dies."

A 3c stamp was issued in her honor - http://www.stratplan.com/ahs/moina1.jpg -

Here's the kicker: After Sept 11, 2001, we understand a little more about heroes. And this year, we could use some 3c stamps, since the postal service will raise the postage for a letter from 34c to 37c. And the [opium] poppy is illegal to be grown here. It is the [corn] poppy that is used in the symbol.

Have a safe and thoughtful Decoration/Memorial Day!

P.S. I have no idea how this message will look/format - hope it's readable.

Dick

Hi-de-ho to all of you.

We are being rather silent. Guess what with summer and the beginning of vacations we are all pretty busy. Thought I would wish everyone a Happy 4th of July. But be safe and sane with travel and fireworks. These fires in the west are really horrific. Harmon(son) who lives in Woodland Park, Co was notified of a possible evacuation, but the wind changed at the last moment so they are still at home. Just packed to go if necessary. Do pray for rain all over. Happy Fourth!!

This was, to us, the end of summer - school started the next day at good 'ol AHS!

Of course, some people had been around the campus for several weeks, getting in shape for football. If you think it's hot now, just think back to the days (daze?) of no air conditioning. The windows were open as far as they would go, and still it was hot, hot, hot.

Nowadays, school is starting earlier: here, day after tomorrow (Aug 14th). That way there is more time off, like a week at Easter, and Spring Break and Christmas.

Labor day was begun quietly on Sept 5, 1882 by the Central Labor Union in Paterson, NJ. It was voted into law on June 28th 1894 as the "First Monday in September" One way or another, it signaled the end of summer and the last vacation day for awhile.

Have a very happy Labor Day!

I received an email from someone, with a jillion other addresses shown which looked like all of our class and a bunch more. So you probably got one too. (Concerning Pepsi can designs). http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/outrage/drpepper.htm

Of course it was a hoax: anytime you get an e that says "forward this to everyone you know" it probably is, too. So first check it out here: http://www.snopes.com/

This will cut out a lot of emails, and maybe some embarassment. Have a good week.

I visited this site to see who all graduated with my uncle, Billy Webb. I never got to meet my uncle, as he passed away 2 months before I was born, but I have heard wonderful stories about him and alot of people he went to school with. I really enjoyed the pics, and especially the class will and prophecy. Your hard work on this website is much appreciated!

Bill was a great guy - the kind of upbeat person you want to be around. Although he was small in stature, he had a big heart.

Here is a picture of him from the annual - he is on the bottom row, second from left http://www.stratplan.com/ahs/letterman1.jpg

Hi Billie: Since you said you hadn't seen that picture of Billy Webb before (Lettermen at AHS), I thought I would include some more from the annual which you may not have seen:

http://www.stratplan.com/ahs/bw1.jpg - Billy's Football pix http://www.stratplan.com/ahs/bw2.jpg - Billy's Basketball pix http://www.stratplan.com/ahs/bw3.jpg - Billy's Track pix (he is on left, I'm on far right)

I don't think Billie is an unusual name for a girl - we had TWO in our class: Billie Jo Jennings Smith, and Billie Fay Walker Taylor!

We now celebrate Columbus Day as the 2nd Monday in October. It wasn't like that when WE went to school in AHS!

And we didn't have the hate promoted about the exploit of the people that he supposedly caused - see <a href="http://www.bright.net/~jimsjems/columbus.html">Columbus Day</a> for the 'dig' at the end.at Columbus.

I like the way we did it, better. 'Course I like a long weekend, too.

I always think T-Day gets short changed be-cause Xmas decorations are out and everyone seems to be occupied with that holiday. But we all do have a lot to be thankful for and I sure am glad I live in the good ole USA and especially in Oklahoma. Thanks Dick for your gym memory. Your memory is much better than mine. I don't know about the memory bit, but I do remember a lot of fun times in the ol' AHS building. Speaking of which - I'll post a picture of a postcard from Ada that was sold on eBay. It shows the AHS building in 1909!

Ah, Nancy - always ahead of my calendar!

Christmas in Ada in '50 had some fun times - Snow and sleds and cold so brisk it made the ears hurt when we came in from outside and warmed up.

Hope everyone has a great holiday season: Santa's list should be checked twice by now, and every classmate is found to be nice (we are too old now to be naughty!)

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
