Dear Classmates,
Where are all of you? I hope you get bored from hearing only from me on the Web, and start sending a message via this method. Until then, Happy St. Patrick's Day to one and all. Don't forget to wear green on the 17th. Thank goodnes, it seems that perhaps Spring is going to come again this year. I know we are not in the clear until Easter (my mother said so, so it must be true) but any cold spells will be short.
Come on everyone, lets hear from you!

Hi Nancy:
Speaking of tax time, when we were in AHS (and some after) Tax date was March 15th. Never messed with Easter. I still remember reading Julius Caesar, in Daisy Bell Britt's class, and thinking we knew to "Beware the Ides of March".
Now it's the Ides of April to beware.

Dear Washington 3rd graders,
I tried this last night, but apparently messed up as it did not get posted. So will try again. Just hope this does't appear twice.
In clearing out a trunk, I found a bunch of letters that all of you had written to me while I was in Brownsville, Texas for that year. I must have mailed you all a letter and then as a class asignment you wrote me back. Was really fun to read through the correspondence.
To refresh your memories. My mother and I spent that winter in Texas at Doc. Cummings suggestion. He wanted to get me through one winter without getting pneumonia. It worked as I have NEVER had it or even the flu since.
Now all of you must come to the next reunion as I will bring these letters with me for you all to read.

Ah, me...too bad I can't read the letters: I'm a Hayes near-graduate (finished pre-Jr. Hi at Horace Mann).
Makes me feel [more] dated to know most of Hayes, all of Horace Mann, and all of AHS have been torn down.
I'll sneak in and read the letters at the 100th reunion maybe.

I can't speak for everyone, but I sure remember where I was that Sunday, Dec. 7th, 1941, and probably you do too.
Our family attented the movie "Pearl Harbor", and I was saddened to see that political correctness has caught up with history; and surprised to learn that Japan 'had' to bomb the U.S. because we had blockaded their oil.
Of course, they left ouw WHY we did that - the Japanese atrocities in China and near countries. I was surprised my kids (now grown0 didn't know about the Flying Tigers, and how we supplied the money and planes for Chaing-Ki-Shek to hire U.S. pilots in 1940. Ah, well. Ours was a good time. And more to come. Norma and I will be at the Class of '51's Reunion in Oct so see you there.

Dear Dick and all,
I do remember where I was when I first heard the news (McSwain Theater). Saw the movie and caught some mistakes, plus I thought they wasted too much time on that stupid love story. Romance has its' place, but not in that movie. I could sure help them make cuts!! But they will make money and that is what they are all about.

I'm with Bill and Dick. More of you should be signing in and sharing whatever with all of us. Such a good way to keep in touch before our next reunion. Don't be scared! Be daring!!

Anyone remember any 4th of July activities while in AHS? Of course we were out of school for the summer, but I don't even remember any fireworks of an organized type.
I DO remember the individual cherry bombs and shells and rockets were much larger then, and liability was not on everyone's mind, like it is now.
Have a nice 4th -

Darn it, we're back from vacation. On the one hand, glad to get back to the good ole USA, but we also had a great time in New Zealand and Australia. Got three nights in Hawaii on the way back, courtesy of the tour company we usually travel with. That is Globus and it delivers what it promises. Hope eveyone had a safe and Happy Fourth. Dick, I don't remember any community type fire works either. Know my father and Doc Cummings had a great time setting off fireworks while I only got to watch. To keep me safe so he said (and I'm sure ment).

Here's the language from the '51 reunion letter - "We plan on a "mixer" on Friday evening to include the 1950 and 1952 classes, a banquet on Saturday night and as it is Ada's 100th Birthday, we hope to have a tour after lunch on Saturday to see the old and new sites in our hometown."
"...We have reserved the banquet halls at the lovely and spacious new Elks Lodge east of Ada on Highway 1. They will cater both the reception and banquet."
So it looks like we can ALL attend the mixer on Saturday, and those with '51 spouses (like me), can attend the banquet on Saturday.
Hope this clears up what was said. Sorry if I confused any by my quick post on May 10th.

Again, (right I hope) their - class of '51 - mixer is Friday. We -class of '50 - are invited.
Saturday is their banquet. It isn't for us. At least no invite.
Maybe I need to quit posting before I get more confused.

Just think: 51 years ago, you would be happily awaiting next Tuesday, the first day of school. Well, maybe not. Maybe just waiting. We always started the Tues after Labor Day Holiday.
Nowadays, many schools have been in session several weeks. Guess we were lucky to drag out our summer vacations. Anyone remember what they did the first day of school in AHS?
Have a Good Labor Day weekend!

If I remember right, I think we were all pretty well ready for school to start after Labor Day. We did get nice long summers. As I understand it, the change to middle of August came about so the poor little dears wouldn't have to worry about taking finals after Xmas. We managed and I think they should go back to the old way. Especially for those schools still not air conditioned. Maybe we were just a lot smarter than the students now adays and could remember stuff even after Xmas. Do know parents were on our necks if we didn't study.
Have a great, but very safe holiday.

I guess we are all feeling about the same way. Un- believable that a calamity like this can happen in the good ole USA. I'm ready to "go get them"!! Also made me think of WW II. We were all in grade school, but it certainly made an impression on us all. Remember the rationing stamps, the shortages, the tin can collections, paper drives, but at least then, we knew who we were fighting. by the way, Bill and I are still flying.

Yes, I remember very well - we had a "A" gasoline card and decal in the car window. Plus ration stamps to get sugar, etc. My mom was Secretary for the OPA (office of price administration) when prices were frozen to prevent gouging. I remember the war bond drives at East Central, and buying stamps at school, making a book to exchange for a bond.
Maybe we were lucky. I don't remember any kooks like today hiding in the bushes back then. If any showed up, they were given short shrift - no messing around.

As Yogi Berra said "it's Deja Vu all over again"
Bill has updated '50 members with an e-mail on the '50 attendees at the Friday Reception. Same room at the Elks club we had last year at the same time, same milling-around crowded people, with too-few chairs.
On Sat night, same room for banquet we used. Must say it was excellent food, especially for a big crowd. Estimated 125 bodies, about 69 or so '51 grads and some spouses and straphangers. Wilma (Mayfield) Kidd '51 and others did a great job on organizing, and spouse Clyde Kidd '50 whipped up a neat roster with scanned photos from the '51 annual. They all got in the east end of the room for the picture, which may make it easier to see than our long-range one.
Paul Landrith was supposed to be the honored speaker, but due to bypass surgery, he couldn't be there so some attendees recollected experiences with him.
Business included (deja vu) approval of a scholarship fund. Mention was made of the '50 class taking 5 yrs to get to $10K needed for endowment, so they put out slips of paper for pledges and raised over $12K to kick it off. Said they didn't know how many would last 5 years. They know of 22 deceased in the class. And one of the star athletes (in my personal opinion) came in with a cane and 5 joint replacements. They declined to give it to the 51st ranking Senior - said something about SATs etc. Oh, well. So much for Deja Vu.
It was a very convivial time; everyone was on their best behavior.
Mention was made of a new gym to be built for the AHS campus (never has had one) and a letter-writing campaign to name it the "Paul Landrith" gym. If interested, send a note to the school board.
Lots more, but space is tight here - hope this helps with some of the doings.

God Bless America - which god? If you mean the only true God of the Bible, then ask, "Why should God bless America?" Read the answers in Proverbs, chapter 14, verse 34; Isaiah chapter 29, verses 13 and 14; and Isaiah chapter 59 verses 1 and 2. There are many more portions of Scripture that deal with this matter.

looks like we DO need to check Proverbs:
Proverbs 22:10 "Cast out the scoffer, and contention will leave; Yes, strife and reproach will cease."
We don't need preaching on this board - although I believe in free speech, in my opinion we would be better off staying on topic and chatting with childhood friends about good times and memories.

Great job! We are envious of this beautiful tribute to your classmates and to Ada High.
