This was, to us, the end of summer - school started the next day at good 'ol AHS!
Of course, some people had been around the campus for several weeks, getting in shape for football. If you think it's hot now, just think back to the days (daze?) of no air conditioning. The windows were open as far as they would go, and still it was hot, hot, hot.
Nowadays, school is starting earlier: here, day after tomorrow (Aug 14th). That way there is more time off, like a week at Easter, and Spring Break and Christmas.
Labor day was begun quietly on Sept 5, 1882 by the Central Labor Union in Paterson, NJ. It was voted into law on June 28th 1894 as the "First Monday in September" One way or another, it signaled the end of summer and the last vacation day for awhile.
Have a very happy Labor Day!
